Semi-Rigids: Flexible Protection for Grading and Mailing
Share
Semi-rigid holders sit somewhere between sleeves and top loaders. They’re firmer than a sleeve but more flexible than a top loader, which makes them especially popular for grading submissions.
Grading companies often prefer semi-rigids because:
-
Cards are well-protected
-
Holders flex slightly, reducing pressure
-
Cards are easier to remove safely
As with all rigid holders, cards should always be sleeved first before going into a semi-rigid. The sleeve protects the surface, while the semi-rigid adds structure.
When inserting a card, take your time. Semi-rigids can be tighter than top loaders, and rushing can cause corner damage. Gently open the holder and guide the card in evenly.
Semi-rigids are also useful for mailing, especially when you want solid protection without excessive bulk. They fit better into envelopes than top loaders and are less likely to crack under pressure.
One mistake people make is reusing semi-rigids that have bent or warped. If a holder doesn’t sit flat anymore, retire it as it can apply uneven pressure to a card.
If you’re preparing cards for grading or want a slim but secure mailing option, semi-rigids are hard to beat.
