Card Sleeves: The Foundation of Card Protection

If you collect trading cards, sleeves are the first thing you should reach for; and usually the first thing people underestimate.

Card sleeves (often called penny sleeves) are thin, flexible plastic sleeves designed to protect the surface of a card. They won’t stop a card from bending, but they will protect against scratches, scuffs, fingerprints, and general wear that happens just from handling.

The biggest mistake people make is thinking sleeves are only for valuable cards. In reality, every card benefits from being sleeved, even commons. Once a card gets surface damage, there’s no fixing it - and that damage often happens long before a card becomes “valuable”.

When sleeving a card, always hold it by the edges and let it slide in naturally. If it catches, stop and adjust. Forcing a card into a sleeve is one of the most common causes of corner damage.

Sleeves are also rarely used alone. Think of them as a base layer. They’re meant to be paired with:

  • Top loaders

  • Semi-rigid holders

  • Binder pages

In all cases, the sleeve protects the card’s surface, while the outer protector provides structure.

Another common issue is using old or damaged sleeves. Dust, grit, or creases inside a sleeve can slowly scratch a card over time. If a sleeve looks cloudy, wrinkled, or dirty, replace it - sleeves are cheap, cards aren’t.

Finally, storage matters. Sleeved cards should be kept away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Sleeves protect cards, but they can’t fight bad storage conditions on their own.

If you do one thing right in card collecting, start with sleeves. Everything else builds on that. It isn't a complex subject, but so many people accidentally get it wrong!
